Bodyflow Machine Review - Dec 2015
As a long standing hip patient of Louise’s I was asked to trial the Bodyflow machine. I have previously had 2 hip Arthroscopies and was to have Iliotibial Band release and Bursectomy surgery in December 2015. From previous surgical experiences I knew what to expect post surgery so was willing to try the Bodyflow machine in the hope that it would improve and reduce my recovery time. Initially I used the machine for one week prior to surgery to familiarise myself with how it worked. I then used the machine 4 times daily on the recommended setting for 6 weeks post surgery. I refrained from having Physiotherapy for 4 weeks so as not to interfere with the machine trial. The machine was incredibly easy to use. The self adhesive pads were positioned on the relevant areas and the machine was simply set to the correct intensity using the ‘up and down’ buttons. These instructions were advised by Louise, hip specialist chartered physiotherapist at Physiocure®.
Initially following surgery my hip area and upper thigh were very swollen and incredibly painful. I measured the circumference of my leg pre-surgery so I could gauge the amount of swelling and monitor how effective the machine was. I started using the machine 1 day post-op, my leg circumference post surgery had increased by 2 inches and the swelling and bruising had started to appear. The machines main aim was to stimulate the tissues to remove the fluid from the hip area (causing me to use the loo lots!) however it also acted as an excellent form of pain relief. The fluid and swelling reduced dramatically (1 inch) over the first 2 weeks and then gradually slowed down. By 6 weeks post surgery the swelling had disappeared completely, I was just left with a small amount of bruising.
The machine was pain free to use, it created a buzzing sensation in the muscles that the pads were applied to and felt similar to a TENS machine. Immediately after using the machine it felt like everything in my leg had relaxed, which in turn helped to minimise the pain. As a Health professional myself I would highly recommend using the machine. I strongly believe that without it my recovery would have been significantly delayed and more painful, my only wish is that it had been available 5 years ago when I had my first Hip Arthroscopy!
